Well,
my favorite squeak is back again! After several cans of various greases, I have decided to record the stupid noise and let you - Benzworld - hear my problem. Hopefully hearing it rather than read my pittiful description of it will help your analysis. Anything you guys reccomend, I will appreciate.

Here is a link to the clip (AVI) about 900-1000kb

and, yes i know what that sounds like (if it were a different place haha LOL)
Thanks

Kris

Hi Kris,

It (the movie) looks like the front of your car.

If so, you have a bad ball joint or secondly a bad steering tie rod (end).

When the gresae dries out, that is exactly what they sound like.

Cheers, MBL

Aside: Is that a Canon camera you've used to make tat clip?

yep its a canon camera Photoshot S30 i believe.

How much would it cost to have the joint replaced? or the tie? what are the consequences of not doing it?

Hi, me again.

The ball joint - steering rod has to replaced at this point, due to insufficient lubriction.

I had one done last year.... $334 at my MB dealership. There was other work done too.. under a bit of a 'comeback' situation. So, I'm not 100% sure that the price is just for the ball joint alone. (I'm sure this was for the ball joint only now-see below)

MBL

I was quoted $758 to replace BOTH lower ball joints on 12/04/2003 at another MB dealership.

it would appear i need to hit lottery lol.
i have several other things that need done too
should the ball join - rod be done first? the other things (of ugrency are: transmission rebuild) that pretty much it the rest i have are cosmetic. Also, what is the normal idle for a 82-300SD ? mine hits about 500-550-600rpms ?

700 wow, dont these joints only cost like 40 buck ive seen them in parts places but i have no idea which to get, brand, part there are like 4 different ball joint things. how much work is involved in putting them in? can it be diy'd ?

edit- autohausaz has em for 40...is the control arm the same thing as the rod we're discussing bc they have a combo kit.

thanks

Not sure which one's autohaus sells, but get Lemforders..there are a Lot of Crap ball joints on the market.

Also, you will Need a ball joint press to get these in...getting them out can be quite a pain as well. I would consider this job a moderate+ for a DIY.. It pays to have some form of external heat (oxy acet. would be ideal) as the joints can get rather stuck. A 5 or 6 pund sledge is neccesary as well.

I can have ball joints to you in 1-2 days.

I did one side only (ripped boot). The part was around $40 the labor was the brunt of the cost.

As for diagnosis, have a friend push down on the fender (as you did) while you are lying next to the wheel. Perhaps turn the wheel to full lock, so you can observe, grab onto the steering rod, or put a long screwdriver to your ear & touch the other end to the component you suspect....

It should be fairly obvious where the noise comes from as it is wicked loud right now.

Hey Kris,

Were you able to get that squeak attended to? I've been wondering how you made out?

Squeak free in Ohio, I hope? [:)] MBL

Thank for asking,

Kris
