It's not true [ally_230ce - 2/25/2005 11:30 AM
This is most always the case. BMW can deliver more horsepower/cc than most auto makers. Torque is a different story. The horsepower comes from things like valve timing and rpm capabilities. This is why Mercedes slaps a supercharger or turbo on the current models to compete with the M's. If BMW sticks to the normally-aspirated route, they will need to be building 7, 8, and 10 liter motors over the next decade to compete with these 600hp monsters Mercedes is putting out. The next Benz release is the 6.3L normally-aspirated motor making 500hp. They will then probably supercharge or turbocharge it because if BMW made a 6.3L motor it would put out over 600hp. (BMW has been good at sticking to 100hp/liter in the M cars.)Guys have you noticed capacity to power BMW packs a harder punch for ex. 1992 525i 2.5/196bhp v/s 1991 260E or 300E(2.6)/167bhp
The E34 models came out in 1988 intended to rival the W124 (first out in 1985/86) and ended in 1995 (same as W124) M5s have come in various models starting prior to the E34 range and upto current (let's just compare the same year), go ahead professor pick a year, and I'll give you the numbers (I think the Merc-Porsche co-engineered 500E line started in 1992).Professor Booty - 2/27/2005 9:44 PM
You are trying to compare an M5 to a 500E. The M5 and E55 AMG are a more reasonable match up. The M5 is at least 5 years newer than the W124. This video is no reason to doubt Mercedes engineering.
Well I know the 5 series and E class are in the same class but the E500 and M5? I always thought the M5 was a step above the regular 5 series as the E55 is to the E class. In my mind an M5 and an E500 aren't a very good match up. But no matter, sorry for interrupting the discussion.ally_230ce - 2/27/2005 9:01 AM
