i bought this vito a few days ago i did post up in newbees section and was kindly routed to here, the van was advertised with this tapping the guy i bought it off did say its a common problem and as lived with the noise for over a year he told me he went to the local stealership and had it checked and was told it was ok no leaking injectors he even had the seals done just incase but still as not cured it he guaranteed me the engine was ok so i bought it cos it still drove nice and is in tideyish condition and history upto 116,000 miles its now got 132.000 miles now,i drove it back from luton to nottingham the tapping was heard in the cab but never got no worse and never lost no power sat a 100 no problem and felt like it could go a little more so after trying that sat between 70 80 and never missed a beat.

this noise is now getting on my nerves i have had a full service at my local diesel speacialist who also checked the injectors also said there ok he as listened to the engine and says it sounds ok to him they have a 2006 vito that sounds the same if not a bit worse, what the hell is this noise it happens between 2000 and 3000 revs but goes the higher it revs and dissapears on letoff our local mertrux says he as never heard of anyone complaining of this i said just google it and you will see he says the internet is make belief (WHAT A TIT) i asked him if there was a ecu update i have seen there is one from 2004 to 2010 he says there was a recall for this but your vehicle didnt fall into that problem area???i dont want to spend no cash with the dealers my personal views on this is it could be timing chain guides but then again its a tapping not a rattley kind of noise it as got a bit quieter now its had oil change and it does get a bit more quieter the warmer it gets just dont know i am thinking i shouldnt of bought it lol .....

this almost certainly is not your proble but......

a couple of years ago I had the same sort of noise in my vito.

tap tap tapping, sometimes a metallic ping to it, only between certain revs and disappearing at others.......... I tried everything I could think of, removing half the engine and rebuilding it bit by bit.

eventually I had to go into wigan kwik fit as I got a puncture whilst shopping.

As I watched him doing the puncture I mentioned my ####dy problem.

"my mates got the same model as you" he said and went on to tell me how he liked the vito and that his mate had the same type of noise that couldn't be found.

He then related that they ignored the fault and did a service on it and the noise went..... turned out to be the air filter cured it.

Just out of desperation I went to MB and got a pukka filter.......... the noise did indeed disappear.

It was a leak in the filter seal, no idea why it caused the noise and I don't care COS ITS GONE.

i wish it was that but mines been replaced or at least i think it as its on the bill lol i dont know what it is it just sounds like an old ford petrol engine, i have an old peugeot expert 1.9 td 98 theres not one bit of rust on it its done 170.000 miles and the engine starts first touch of the key no smoking no tapping pulls like a train i think in 6 years of owning it its never broken down once and only had to replace the normal items like exaust and tyres brakes and regular services i thought merc where of much higher quality than that this is rusting on the drivers door above the trim and under it and around the edges same passenger door and some on various parts of the body and sills but what the previous owner as done is gone round it with touch up paint : going to mertrux to see if i can get anything from paint warranty they cant say this rust is stone chips the bonnet is still perfect ? i know it as to of rusted from the inside out i had this problem with my audi it was the nickle coating or something like that they do before galvaniseing it audi didnt bat an eyelid they got it straight in and also gave me a nice s4 to run around in till it was done lets see what mertrux say lol...anyway thanks for the bit of info will check if they have changed it and try and see what this tapping is :dunno:

hope you find the source of the tapping soon......... my filter was "new" having been fitted at a service only 750 miles before the problem (just before I got it....... the problem was the seal around the edge wasn't sealing the airbox as it had dropped inside the box and not in the airbox seam.

note that most vitos are not galvanised, it becoming the standard on all vitos / v's in more recent years.

good luck with the problems

Sound very similar to mine, I've just had mine remapped (which I was going to get done anyway) I have read about getting the ecu flashed can cure it ? It's still the same though...mine is fairly low miles,42,000 I would like to get to the bottom of it as quite annoying, sweet as a nut until about 2000 rpm when driving, then it clears about 3000 rpm....I'm going to give the forte top end treatment a go...

I have the same too. But it's only when i am outside of the van. Never inside. The problem is that there are so many moving parts it would be hard to track it down.

I did consider it to be something like the bearings on the serpentine belt

To be honest though, I live with it, the van is sweet as a nut so only bothers pedestrians. I do notice it on other brands of van too, I think it's fairly common.
