ok so i already posted this question but now i have all of the symptoms... My 84 300d will intermittently take off, from a stop, in 2 gear and rev really high. sometimes, if i manually hit the the kick down switch behind the accelerator pedal it will drop down to first and take off as normal, other times it takes a few tries. today i bought a new kick down switch and i will be trying that tomorrow. Any other ideas what it could be?

First check the oil level.

If you don't know the last time the transmission oil and filter was changed, do that first.

Check the bowden cable on top of your valve cover, there should be no slack at the idle position.

Check the vacuum.

be carefull when you check the transmission fluid and make sure you wipe the stick with a lint free cloth or piece of leather (from the owners manual).

I had similar symptoms and found my bowden cable had jumped the stop on the valve cover. You might check it out.
