TODAY, i picked up the glass for a bullet proof experiment on W140 glass...ya know, for all dem craigslist and ebay losers. time to have some fun.
first....lets get this out of the way!
now that i made myself clear...lets move on to the fun shall we!
Ok. Here are the goods.
One passenger front glass. One driver rear glass, short wheel base and the small window as well. Each main window was $27, and little glass was $16.
At the yard a Jack stand shattered the first pane on one hit (the little rear window triangle glass) but took 3 more to break thru just the first pane, with overall light force (I didn't have glasses or gloves on so I was on side of caution)
I will update the Q/A as suggestions come in.
here for some Q and A!
Q: What is tacks experiment?
A: to see how bullet proof the w140 glass is.
Q: what should we expect?
A: one must assume full penetration at all times.
Q: why are you doing this tack?
A: because I'm bored, and curious.
Q: what car did this come off of?
A: 1994 S320, with window tint and spray paint overspray on the inside.
Q: were the windows properly removed?
A: yes. not one ounce of force was used to remove the windows.
Q: was the car damaged.
A: front end may have been, as the passenger airbag was displayed. But the drivers was not so considering the amount of picked parts of the front end I am unable to be sure.
Q: are there any imperfections on the glass?
A: nothing more than wear and tear from what I can tell.
Q: what bullets from what kind of gun are you using?
A: 9mm FMJ: Beretta NANO
SW40 FMJ: Walther PPS,
12G shot gun buckshot: Remington 870.
Q: how will the windows be mounted?
A: mounted is unknown yet. i may make a wood brace for them, or just simply lean them against something. if anyone has ideas, chime in!
Q: how far away will you be shooting?
A: not sure yet, im thinking one window maybe 12-15 feet away, and the other 20 feet away.
Q: how are the windows tinted?
A: appears to be film. unknown kind but they are all dark not purpled, so im assuming the tint was fairly newer, or that good stuff. We will assume it was cheap garbage but fairly new considering the cosmetic condition of the car being poor...very poor. it does appear however to have been installed in a shop and not likely at home DIY style.
Q: do you have any untinted windows to experment with?
A: no, unfortunately the pick a part only had one W140, one that someone spray painted black inside and out...including the leather.
Q: when is the experiement:
A: currently, its set for this coming saturday, Oct 13th but this is subject to change. regardless of any changes, we are aiming for completion before the end of October.
Q: will you use anything for showing penetration past the glass?
A: yes, some sort of oversized large fruit such as a waddamellon or a punkin. (via Actros617 advice)
