I just bought a used 1998 E300D Turbo Diesel. It has 130,000 miles. I would like to used Mobil1 synthetic oil. But there are many different viscosities. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this....

check in your owners manual. it should give you a chart on what viscosity to use in diffrent temperatures and climates.

Diesel specific oils have inherently different characteristics than gasoline engine oils because the contamination and heat characteristics of diesel engines are very different from their gas couterparts. I use Delo synthetic in my E300D and Rotella makes a good synthetic also. Not sure if I'd go with a "regular" synthetic like Mobile 1. Soot dispersion, sludge control, higher operating temperature, etc. these are all important factors. If memory serves gasoline motor oils have a much higher detergent level than you'd ever want to run in a diesel too. Just some things to think about.
