What are the symptoms of a bad vacuum advance?

I'm assuming I can test this with my mity vac, but what would be the symptoms pf the diaphragm failing?

Is there a cheaper alternative one can try out there then the $70 one on AH?

Manual says "Vac retard" is used to improve idle at below 17°C (should be inactive otherwise).
How many vac ports are on the bellow?

A bit of a leak is insignificant as long as the leak is lesser than the engine vac at idle.
But a bit of a leak now is a bit more of a leak later.
