i have an '88 190E. after hearing some 'banging' while driving i got underneath the car and there is a plastic 'arm' that runs parallel to the shock. this is in the REAR (left rear to be specific). the arm connects at top and, i think, bottom with a bolt through a bushing.

it is cracked about 2 inches from the top and the two ends are banging against each other while i drive.

does anyone know;

- what this part is called
- where to find it
- if it's relatively easy to replace (it looks achievable)
- what its purpose is
- is it safe to drive on temporarly

and finally,

- should the other side be replaced at the same time.

thanks in advance.

ps
i could get a picture of it if that will help.

From the description, that's the rear sway bar link, aka "Link Rod"

On your 88, MB used a W124 part 124 320 02 89 . . . a whopping $11 at the dealeship parts desk! Luckily, that's the cheapest one of five links in the rear suspension and is the only one that sits parallel to the rear shock. All the other pricer ones are perpendicular.

Some of the more "sporting" drivers replaced the plastic link with the all metal ones from the 300TE wagon, with just a bit of trimming of the bushing.

thanks. that is the one. called "connecting rod for torsion bar" in the service manual.

i have to order an air filter from autohaus.com and they also carry that part. ( https://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=0efvzy553oyoyx5550ccm045&partnumber=1243200289 )

i thought of adding it to my order but i will drive to the dealer if there's any advantage.

for a part like that i was thinking that they are likely the same. do you happen to know if meyle is the normal OEM manufacturer?

thanks again.
