If you already live in a rural area where the populatin is small having a running car would help you survive.
In a City or a rural area with a high population a running Car would be a target that could easily be shot up or stopped with a Road Block.
A running vehicle might help you make a quick escape out of the City if the Roads are clear enough and People have not yet overcome the shock of the bad incident yet. But, you need to have someplace to go!
However, ounce People good or bad have time to form groups/bands you will be at their mercy.
There is a big difference between an apocalypse where there will be no law and a disaster that is a more temp thing.

If its a diesel you will need a good headstart.
many zombies still have non decayed ears, which could totally here it coming.
i'd prefer to try to find one of these. for those who don't know anything about it, it's about twice the size of a hummer, and built by the Canadians of all people.

With out Infantry and/or Air Support a Vehicle is dead meat.
If you want to escape from some where with out getting ambushed and are worried about the EMF killing you gas powered vehicle how about a Diesel Powered Gyrocopter.
Hope that one get better gas mileage then a hummer, when a tank full may last 100mile...you'll need that .50 cal
