So, I've recently acquired a '97 SLK 230, I've been driving it for a while and it's really underpowered.

So, after a quick inspection I've found that the s/c does nothing, same with the by-pass valve. The clutch on the s/c is ok, I put 12v to it and it works nicely. The feed to the s/c has intermittent 12v at idle, I'm guessing it's operated by a switched earth though higher up the rev range somewhere. Regardless, it does nothing at any RPM.

The by-pass valve doesn't do anything at any RPM either, it has ~6v to two of the pins and ~6 Ohm to ground.

Also, I noticed when I took the plastic cover off the front of the engine that the inlet cam adjuster is leaking oil at the bottom and to the elec connector. Didn't seem to have travelled too far along the loom but I'll check properly when it's less dark and cold outside. I'll replace the adjuster though.

So, any ideas anyone as to how I'm gonna get this sad little SLK lighting up the rear tyres again? Any links to wiring diagrams would be alot of help also.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, so scrap the intermittent 12v to the s/c. That was a dodgy 15A fuse which has been replaced and now I have a constant 12v to the s/c with engine running. I should probably mention that the by-pass valve itself is working, but it's just staying in the open position. If I apply pressure to close it, it fights back to stay open.

Any ideas anyone?

the bypass is open at idle and light throttle applications. as soon as you apply a quick burst of throttle or full throttle it will shut.

car has to be in D for this to work. reving it in N wont shut it

Thanks, I didn't know that.
I will have a try later with an assistant.
Do you know if the s/c clutch is operated by a switched earth?

Hi,
If anyone's interested, after checking every wire and connection to do with the s/c and by-pass valve, the only thing I didn't have was an earth to the s/c. This comes straight out of an ecu so I figured it had to be a faulty sensor and the ecu had killed the earth feed to protect the engine. I had the codes read and it turned out to be a faulty Camshaft position sensor. Best £ for horsepower increase I've ever spent!

Thanks for the help :)
