I have recently ran into a 79 300 td wagon, but still unsure if I should buy. I've heard these cars can run forever, but I am still interested to see how many miles are on it. the odometer reads 000600, is there a way to see how many times it has flipped over? Also the tranny seems to lag a bit in switching gears. Is that normal for these cars or is it a potential problem? 2 other problems are: the radiator has been patched and it needs a new plug-in heating unit.
Depends on the price. The trans is easy to replace, and often just needs new fluid and filter. Pick and Pulls transmissions sell for usually a little less then $100. Get a radiator there too. There is also a manual conversion for the troublesome climate control.
My climate control quit except for the default defrost
on a 78 300D. When I repaired the vacuum, works fine now. Pick and pull is a source for radiators too.
Station wagons are tough to find. Expect to pay big $$$ for a turn key, or put it back in shape yourself?
They can haul 3/4 ton if the rear hydroulics are in good shape.
Another thing to look at is the front end on any 123.
Can be pricey to fix, but a major bonus if in good shape.
