Hello,

I have a grey market 1996 MB CL600 with 108k miles and I would greatly appreciate any insights you can offer on how frequently the transmission should be serviced. The transmission works perfectly. I've had mechanics suggest that if the fluid still looks good, correct color, viscosity, etc. there is no need to change (in fact I've heard it can be detrimental).

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

We like to do it every 40-50k miles and replace the filter, what ever your box is (722.6 after 06-96) you will have a drain plug on the converter. Most indies charge about £135 in the UK for this job but you can do it your self.

This is what i have heard too, in that every 40 - 50k miles is good.

The only caveat I have heard is that if your car has not had a transmisssion service at all in it's life, it may well be on its last legs and in that case servicing it may expose more work that needs to be done - and so, which I maybe wrong, I think this is the circumstance in which people say "if it aint broke (yet) leave it alone..."

Others more knowledgable than I may know more

100.000k miles is nothing really, many do not get the fluid changed within this time, I have never heard of anyone who has had problems from changing it

Thanks everyone for the great input on suggested transmission maintenance; really helps to have some additional insights into what makes the most sense.

40-50k is a pretty good interval for the transmission fluid to be done. It can't hurt, especially if you have a car without records from the previous owner. Just plan it around other schedule service so the car doesn't have to make a special trip to your dealer or shop of choice. My car has a little over 120,000, and I have done a transmission fluid change twice since I've owned it. No adverse affects here, it actually shifts better than it did when I bought it.
