Hi all,

I'm in the process of changing my water pump in my 93 400 sel and in order for me to remove the last bolt it looks like I need to remove the harmonic balancer. Is there any way around removing it? If not is there an easy way to remove the main bolt on the pulley? I really don't want to buy a crankshaft locking tool that i'll never use again.

I'll take any advice you can give, I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew on this project.

Thanks Eric

If you don't have an impact wrench or don't have the space to use it on the engine in the car, use the access hole on the bottom of the transmission below the ring gear to lock the ring gear with whatever you can find. I used a short piece of square rod wedged in place to remove the harmonic balancer and a longer rod placed through the ring gear to reinstall it.

The harmonic balancer had to come off of my car(1996 s500) to get the subject bolt off for the water pump.

No work around available - it has to come off.

Good luck
