Ok, sometimes when I start my car (97 E320) the second I turn the key there is a loud pop sound followed by some smoke out of the engine compartment. Also when I try to start the car after this event I have to give it a little gas before it will start. Any suggestions on what this is? Thanks for any help.

of course, more diagnostics will need to be done, but it sounds like an accumu-
lation of un-ignited fuel in the combustion chamber, followed by possible spark.
but i'm not sure how this would result in white smoke...so perhaps i'm the one
blowing smoke.

you really need someone who is familiar with MB system to check fuel and
ignition here....to systematically work through to determine the cause. keyboard
help can only go so far....or protracted back and forth.

Banging noises?, Smoke in the Engine Bay?? ... not a good combination!

Sounds both Dangerous for YOU, as well as your car (Lots-O-Expensive items which could be damaged "if", indeed, you are having detonations)!!!

Get it looked at ASAP. "Personally" I wouldn't be driving it with such conditions..

do not use your car until properly diagnosed. something is backfiring somewhere thru the intake tract. crank sensor, cam sensor? something that has to do with engine timing. Are there any warning lamps on in the cluster? Good luck my friend.
