So my husband and I were going out of town and while driving 70mph, my car started to make a strange noise. The only thing I can compare the noise to is a roulette wheel and the clicking it makes while it turns. It starts making this sound when we reach 20mph, but stops when we slow down. We have checked everything underneath the car and everything is tight and nothing is loose. Any thoughts on what it might be? Also, my check engine light is not on.

How many miles on the car?

Assuming the noise is vehicle speed related, and not engine rpm related, it would be something in the driveline and there are multiple suspects. Typically CV joints make clicking noises like that, but tend to be worst when turning. Other items are u-joints, carrier bearings, wheel bearings and the transfer case.

My first suspect would be the transfer case, but I don’t know much about this model’s setup. Do you have the ability to disengage 4WD mode to see if the noise goes away?
