Strange Engine failure

I have this strange engine problem
ok here goes there is a coolant temperature sensor
thats bugging me ok the car just wont idle when its connected but it's revs up pretty fast and is ok and all, but when i connect the sensor and start the motor up it will idle but there is no way that can rev it at all then just slowly but if i do it too fast it will stall and its just hard to get it up to any rpm higest it goes is 5000rpm and it takes time to get it there any ideas what could be wrong? defected sensor or? altough i find it strange to act that way just because og a collant sensor.
any ideas would be appreciated

I can't see any connection between the sensor and the rpms, other then some electronic component might be shorting out when you connect the sensor. Just a guess. I had a few electrical problems and they will play all sorts of tricks on you.
