Purchased a replacement liner/sound absorber/heat shield for under the hood of my 82 240D sedan some months ago....brand new and spanking clean. Went to auto parts store and bought "extra sticky" spray adhesive with which to install this padding under the hood. Worked great for about a month and then it started to come down. Bought another "industrial strength" spray adhesive and re-installed hood padding.....worked great for several months and then it too came down on the engine.

My sedan does NOT have holes in underneath the hood with which to use plastic grommets (sadly)...in fact, there are NO holes for this purpose. The OEM padding was shot to hell from 30+ years of use but those small parts remaining still stuck to the hood bottom.

Does anyone have a clue about what adhesive will work to allow this new padding to remain fixed under the hood? I live in Florida and the combination of moisture/humidity and rainfall makes for a challenge on this front.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide......:surrender:

I used 3M Yellow Super Trim Adhesive. It has held up for probably around a year or so by now here in Tampa.
Like this: 3M 08090 Yellow Super Trim Adhesive - 19 oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive

Now ironically my can actually had a green label..

Edit: I also remember cleaning it to the best I could with some solvent. I don't recall but it was denatured alcohol or acetone or something.

I would think its best to have the hood off and upside down on a pair of saw horses. Once the glue is allowed to "tack" up, install the pad and place something of some weight ( girl friend? ) :) on the pad overnight. With the hood just up vertically, I doubt the pad will stay

This will irritate the purists.

I used Liquid Nails (construction cement) dispensed from a caulking gun. Three years so far on a 300CD. No cleaning off old stuff, just squirt, hold for a couple of minutes and good to go.

I also used the 3M Super Trim Adhesive...and had the pad come loose on one side. At the time I recall that the Internet said that the shelf-life of the 3M adhesive was a factor. Sure enough, I had bought mine from the auto parts store, where it had probably sat for a very long time.

Toluene/toluol is the native solvent for many trim and weatherstrip adhesives - you might try that to remove the old glue, which will help the adhesion of anything you use.
