Just out of curiosity, how many of you that have removed your steering wheel used loctite when you put it back on, or did you just simply torque it up and leave it that way?

I haven't removed mine yet but will be this winter to remove the instrument cluster to clean and polish the clear plastic and at the same time replace all of the bulbs. The wheel on mine has never been removed and man did they ever apply a lot of green loctite to it in the initial install.

The green was used on both my '72 and '73. I did not put any back on the '73. The '72 (needless to say) was never reinstalled.

Much easier to remove the nut than the 10mm hex bolt. No heat needed.

Mine wasn't loctited when I got it, and I've never bothered to. Amazingly, the steering wheel has not yet fallen off during a tight maneuver.
If the car ever gets to the point where there's absolutely no chance of anything ever breaking on it again, I'll consider putting some loctite on it. Since I'm pretty sure I'll have to remove the steering wheel one or two more times, I'll leave it as it is.

Loctite Red is is the high strength stuff for parts that will seldom or never be dismantled. Blue is for parts that may have to come apart sooner. Never heard of green, but maybe that was a pre-Loctite product?

But, Loctite is a big rip off! Here in Canada, it costs about $20 for a small (10ml bottle) and then they say to use a primer - $40 for a tiny spray can at Fastenal!

I actually thought a few days ago that the bolt had come loose as there was some play in the wheel itself. It turned out to be the philips screws holding the bracket in place. I'd probably never tightened when I had it all apart last winter.

No fair cheating! :)

If I recall correctly, when you removed your original wheel, the pic you have of the screw lying on the steering wheel has faint evidence of red threadlocker... or is that rust?

Where would we be without straying and Hijacking. MBCA, that's where.

Unfortunately, yes. You do have to remove it.
