Took the car for an alignment today after replacing the upper control arms. He said the steering has play.

Is there an adjustment in the steering gearbox to take up the play?

Yes. There is a screw and locking nut on top of the box. Turn the screw out to reduce play. But be careful. The shop manual is your friend here.

And be sure you've eliminated all looseness in the many joints in the steering system first.

If you adjust it, make sure you have the steering box centered as that is where the gears are the tightest. When you're done, make sure the steering self centers when you turn and release the wheel. If it won't it's too tight.
