Just curious, has anyone tried to put a newer gearbox in a 107 to get rid of the 1" play in the steering wheel?

1” play? Have you checked the steering coupler? That is what is currently responsible for my 1” of play. Doing the job this week!

That and check the steering box adjustment, a minor tweak made a world of difference on the '88.

Up to 1" play is allowed per MB specification, and most of it comes from the sheer diameter of the steering wheel. I've just replaced coupler and rebuilt the steering box on my old lady, the play is now minimal which is what I wanted.
