Hey all, I have the Bundts but want to put on the steelies with hub caps. I found some wheels but was told they're 15". I thought steelies for my ride were 14"? Also, I already bought the hubcaps, waiting to receive them ... are there different size hubcaps for 14" and 15"? I've googled and can not find 15" steel rims but the owner insists they're 15" and has tires mounted.

Thanks all,
Carl

I believe 15" steels exist but they're not as common as the 14's. I am pretty sure you have to get 15" hubcaps as well but perhaps the lip is contoured to accept the same hubcap to save on tooling when they designed it.

The 15" steel wheels are rare; you may have happened on a set if you're lucky. But how is he measuring the diameter. The rim to rim diameter on a 14" wheel will read 15" and make someone think they have 15s when they have 14s. The real size (diameter and width) should be stamped in the face of the wheel near the lug holes.

If it has tires mounted on the wheels that is the easiest way to verify but otherwise the 15x6J or or whatever it should be is on there.

The hub caps, if they are the full covering type will not work. If they are the small stainless cap used with beauty rings from the mid 60's era they might work if the wheels have the bumps to secure them.

Chances are they're W201 15" steelies. Wrong offset too BTW.

I have heard that these rims can easily be measured incorrectly to seem an inch larger, too...

Sounds like something I would do, anyway...

15'' rim has been available for station as an extra and for special bodys, like ambulance and hearse as standard. The hubcaps for them are definitely different from 14'' hubcaps and something like the holy grale - extremly rare, extremly expensive.

We'll find out soon, like Nutz said it may be from a 201. I can't remember the last time I saw a W201 of any type with a steel wheel though.

You don't remember the 'Star Trek' wheel covers for early W201's? I had these too on my '86 and opted to drive around with nothing at all on my steelies :)

Oh okay, I thought those were just Euro spec covers were they on the 2.6L or just the 2.3's? Didn't they put those on the W126's as well? I saw a few as such on my last trip to China.

'Dusty' has them on his 300SEL.

Okay, found two 14" at the junkyard today, one in my trunk makes three, just need one more. Can someone direct me to painting advice? Is there a specific color for refinishing the black steel wheels? Think powder coating is okay? Also, about the hubcaps, have four coming, is there a template for painting?

Thanks,
Carl

Carl,

Where are you located?

I have a couple of random 14"steel wheels of varying widts that I would be more than able to part with for very cheap. Probably for what I paid (around $10) + shipping.

If you can't find what you are looking for elsewhere...
