Hi,

I currently drive a 2000 slk. I have always had a benz and have never thought of any other car really. Until the other day. A friend of mine has bought a BMW Z4 3.0 which i drove the other day. I think i might have fallen in love with it.lol. It is a absolutely amazing car and i was left wanting one. I still love my benz, but am seriously considering the BMW. What benz would be equal to the 3.0 Z4?

If you are referring to power, the SLK32 would be superior in my opinion, but you are asking on an SLK forum so your responses may tend to be slightly slanted!

The numbers don't change from forum to forum though...and numbers show almost everything.

I kinda like the Z4...it looks like a shark, but I'd still go with an SLK cause the interior is nicer and the hard top.

yup i have a 230.. its not actually the power that made me like the Z4.. i think it has fresher body styling that our R170.. plus the problems heard and problems experienced on my SLK tells me to move on.. given a chance i will trade it in too.. too bad the Z4 is not hardtop.

In my quest for a roadster the Z's (3 or 4) were never even considered...cloth top and don't look that good.
Totally agree. The Z4 has a nickname as the 'Smash car" with all those creased side panels.

To each his/her own. Z3/Z4 not exactly a classic look!

BMW Factory visit

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Z4. I'm not really into the looks of it. Nonetheless, I am currently getting an MBA, and this Friday I am actually going down to the BMW factory in Greenville, SC. That is the factory where they produce the Z4 and the X5. I actually have to write a 25 page paper on BMW's inventory management systems. Nonetheless, I'll observe the "quality" of the manufacturing process and let you know what I think.
By the way, I have to agree with TK Doom, you just can't beat the hardtop on an SLK. It will get more looks than your standard clothtop convertible (at least in my experience.)

I hate the look of the M coupe, but the M roadster was nice...and FAAAAAST. One thing I wish the R170s had is dual mufflers and quad tips. Mmmmmmmm........

To answer your question. The Benz equivalent to the Z4 3.0 would be either an R170 SLK320 or an R171 SLK350.

If you have an SLK200 or SLK230, I can see why you'd like a Z4 3.0. Ever try a Boxster? It's a much better driver's car than either the Z4 or SLK, and it looks better than the Z4's "Bangled" styling.

I also drove the Z4, and it's not a bad car really.

BMW hasn't been selling many, so some dealers might bring the price down a lot if you negotiate. But you gotta do it quick, winter is going away and you'll have a harder time negotiating in summer.

Only problems I have with it is that the interior takes some time to get used to, and the seats (Stock) are a bit naff. Too hard. I think you can get some upgraded seats which are better however.

Go check out some BMW forums and look for any issues people have with the car. That way you'll know if it really is for you.

Have you tried the new SLK 350? More power, a vario roof (as opposed to the cloth top) and the interior is nicer (in my opinion). A different look for a car too, but you should get what you like the most [;)]

I have been looking myself and have been looking at the z3, z4, vette, and boxster. Just for entertainment I looked at the 171, but 65k for the 350 I laughed. Really what it comes down to is what style you like best. Z4 didn't really float my boat but the z3 did, still think its a super sexy car, classic tasteful lines, lovely wood dash, analog clock and would move. You might want to take a hard look at the boxster S as someone mentioned. In all fairness it runs circles around my slk except in looks, it rather sedate. If you really enjoy the looks of the bimmer go for it, the z3 I had before as a fun, reliable, little car that scooted right along when you got up on it. Its hard to compare them w/o knowing whats most important to you. I would say best lookin is the slk (r170), best performance the porsche and interior appointments, reliable n easy to live with the bimmer (at least was my experience).

Course this is just my humble opinion, and I am no expert, just my experiences after owning or several test drives of each.

Keep up posted on what u decide!!

Yeah, something that I just like about the Z3's classic styling-kinda like the SLK!

SLK is suited to London

Hi KatiebabyBenz !
I also had a Z4 for the weekend last year. Noise, performance and handling are better than the SLK, but build quality and comfort are no where near as good. On the open road its great, but I see you live in London too, and I much prefer my SLK around London as opposed to the BMW. But thats my view.
Also, I liked the Z3 when they were released, but now I think they look outdated, whereas the SLK still looks fab. Will the Z4 go the same way.
ANYWAY, there are now 3 Londoners on the forum, so you have to keep ya SLK.
Where abouts in London are you ?

Dude, anyone trying to sell you an SLK350 for 65k is a robber. I got mine fully loaded with every option except for the TPMS and 7sp Auto for 58,200 and then had a $1500 discount on top of that.
For 65k, you should have a nicely optioned SLK55 AMG.

Cheers!

P.S. This is in the NY/NJ Metro Area.

I'm not a big fan of thr Z4s looks and I'd have to think they will start to look even worse as time goes on. I also couldn't go back to a soft top after having a hard top on the SLK. That is if this is your daily driver. If this car is only for the occasional weekend than it doesn't matter as much.

I'd have to say nothing gets more attention than putting the top down or up at a light in the SLK. People actually go "oooh" and "aaahhh" still. [:)]
