I have read the post related to finding and removing the top bolt for the starter (88 560SL). I'm more confused than ever. Is there a consensus or a thread that I missed showing exactly how to remove this bolt? I don't see how there is room to get to it from underneath.

I had to use a series of socket wrench extensions, starting near the rear of the trans and wiggling its way to the top bolt. Probably 3' long. PITA but worked.

Need a little more help. With the suggestions listed I was able to replace the starter with a Bosch SR459X Starter. The starter is about half the diameter size of the original. The starter in the car was a Bosch 0001314018. The new starter spins but does not engage. Multiple sights list the Bosch SR459X as the replacement for a 88 Mercedes 560SL. Any throughts?

Benzshovel, I too have a starter issue.
Were you able to remove that top bolt with your 560SL on Jack Stands, or did you have a Lift?

Also, did you find the bolt to be Torx or Hex?

The replacement starter for my 350SL was SR59X, I think. In ant event, it was quite a bit smaller and had reduction gearing.

This what Parts Geek says: (not exactly clear!)

88 1988 Mercedes 560SL Starter Bosch

Product SKU: W0133-1602873
Product Note: Remanufactured - SR 459X Bosch shows listings for SR 59X for 1986-87 and SR 459X for 1988 on which are valid for this application if customer would rather use permanent magnet gear reduction version of this starter. When using the smaller SR 459X, (1) 116 151 03 45 centering plate is required.
Detailed Note: There are two sizes for the unit. The bigger unit is the original, while the smaller, thinner unit is a gear reduction type but will do the job. Both are interchangeable Centering plate to be sold with this unit: 116 151 03 45

I was able to remove it off Jack stands. I did cheat and bring a friend that was a mechanic to help after I failed. The trick was removing the tire, Removing a bolt from the tie rods to get them out of the way. Next step was getting the fill tube out of the way removing the bolt holding the bracket on top of the engine. With this done you can get to the top bolt. It still required 2 X 12 inch extensions and a universal swivel or socket. The advantage to moving the fill tube and steering is that we could reach from underneath rather than above the transmission. The bolts require a hex on one side and a Hex on the other. Also- It was possible to remove the wiring before dropping the starter. That said I still need to figure why the new starter does engage.
