Some times when cranking the engine, the starter stays on after the engine is started. If I turn the key to the off position, the engine keeps running and the starter keeps cranking for a few minutes, until the battery is disconnected or it stops by itself. This has only happened a few times during the season.
When diagnosing a fault in the ignition system, I tried to run a lead from the + terminal of the battery, to the + side of the ignition coil. Doing this resulted in the same problem each time I tried to crank the engine. It stops cranking when I remove this lead.
Is this most likely a fault in the ignition switch or in the starter?

Sounds like starter solenoid would be the best place to start
