The starter keeps running on my SL 450 -75 about 5 s. after I release the key.
(I have a bad coldstart issue on my car so I have had to cranck a couple of times before it starts.)

Not always, but sometimes the starter keeps running after I release the key to wait a while and try start again.

Could the starter need some kind of service?
If the engine starts and the starter just keeps running I guess the whole engine could catch on fire??

Anyone else had this kind of "problem" ??

Sounds like the bendix. A starter replacement is probably in order.
One question though. Is the engine actually cranking or are you just hearing the starter?

I am releasing the key and then the starter continues to spin for a while.

It would be either the ignition switch at the dash, or the starter mounted solenoid. Probably the latter. Run a search for 'replace starter'. You'll find several, I'm sure.

Don't give it a second thought mate. Benzie lives in Texas and has the same problem.
