My SRS light came on this AM. Message appears on the display, “SRS malfunction drive to workstation. How serious is this. Is it something that can wait a day or two??? This is on a 2005 E320.

In all likely hood your SRS system ahs detected a fault and has deactivated the entire system. If you have a collision your airbags might not deploy and your pretensioners may not fire.

Has this warning STAYED on? If not, it may have just been due to a temporary glitch. Last Friday, I got this warning AND an "ESP Malfunction" Warning when I started the car. I turned off the car and re-started it and didn't get these warnings. Being concerned about it, I asked my dealer to check it out while my car was in for an phone installation today. The dealer ran their diagnositcs and checked any codes that were registered in the cars system, and said these codes weren't registered, and that the diagnostic said everything was fine. They suspect that the warnings were due to some temporary occurence and said I don;t have anything to worry about. I think if something like this comes on and STAYS on, then you have a serious problem.

Well...the damnedest thing happened to me today. The SRS warning in my car came on and STAYED on. The strangest thing was that I was driving all over Southern California today on business. Then, after my last meeting of the day, I got in the car, started to drive it, and about 3 minutes into the drive, this warning comes on and won't go off when I cycle the key.

The car goes in to the dealer tommorow to get fixed. They just finished installing a phone kit in my car and I wonder if maybe, during the process, they hit one of the wiring connections making it get loose, and it finally detected a fault later in the day. I hope the fix is simple and will require only one trip to the dealership.

Of course, I suspect, like with many problems, this one might not show up when I take it to the dealership tommorow, so I made sure to photograph it today so they don't think I am crazy. One of the techs at the shop swears that all MB vehicles have built in sensor that uses the GPS system to detect when they are at an MB dealership and insures that any problems in the car are temporarily non-evident while the car remains within a 2 mile radius of the dealership, only to show up again later when you are back at your home or office. [:)]

Here's a pic of what this warning looks like. Hopefully you will never get to see this in your vehicle:

Well, in my case this turned out to be caused by soemthing called the SRS Connection Spiral. This is actually a spiral piece of wire that mantains a continuous electrical circuit between the spinning steering wheel and the fixed steering column. It tightens when up turn the wheel to the left and loosens when you turn it to the right. In any case, the dealership said this part had a fault in it, and they replaced it and the issue went away. Only the one they replaced it with makes a scraping sound when you turn the wheel (sounds like scraping a piece of paper around on your desk). So they have to replace the part again. What fun. At least they know what they are doing and actually get issues resolved [B)]

Well folks. Some more bad news. Im taking my 05 E320 Sport AMG back to the dealer tomorrow for the second time with this damn SRS malfunction. The first time around they change the drivers side airbag. Im not sure what the hell they're going to come up with next. Such a fine automobile should not be having these kinds of problems.

I have a 2005 E320, purchased in 12/2004. My SRS light and "Restraint System Malfunction" message first appeared in 4/2005. I have been back to two different dealership 5 times for the same problem.

1. replace horn contact spiral.
2. replaced driver side airbag
3. Loose cable connection.
4. replace airbag apiral
5. replace sterring column control module.

Each time I had it fixed, the light would come back on ranging from 2 weeks to while I was still in the dealership's driveway. The car was in the shop for a total of 22 days.

Now the SRS light and the warning message is on again. I am now checking into the California Lemon Law and see if I can get a replacement vehicle.

Does anyone have the same problem? If so, how was it resolved?

I had the same problem and it was resolved.....permanently....by replacement of the part called the "SRS Connection Spiral" which the mechanical techs sometimes also refer to as the "clock spring". This is probably what your dealership is calling the "horn contact spiral" or it may be the "airbag spiral". I am certain that in my case, the part they replaced was the one that provides the continuous electrical circuit to the SRS airbag in the steering wheel.

I can tell you, without doing a bunch of research, that if you have been back to the dealership to have the same problem fixed more than four times, you can press your case for replacement of the vehicle per California's "lemon law". Also, you should contact MB Corporate directly (can do this easily via TeleAID) and register your issue with them along with a detailed history so it is on file in the event that you have to take them to court for this. For an irreparable issue in a major passenger safety system, it seems like you would definitely qualify for a replacement. Make sure you have saved the paperwork from all of your visits.

I am surpirsed MB didn't already offer you a replacement. When I was having a much more minor problem with my passenger side seatbelt alarm (also ended up being fixed permanently after a few tries) my MB service advisor already mentioned to me that he was assembling the paperwork to request a replacement vehicle if they couldn't get mine fixed.

I am convinced that the dealership you work with makes a BIG difference on these cars. That was my experience with Lexus also.

Good luck resolving your issue.

It should be covered by the warranty.

For those that have paid out of pocket for the repair outside of warranty there is hope that
a recall will issued by the NHSTA. If that takes place MB will reimburse those people.

I beg that you still go to the NHSTA and file a complaint. Until your car is fixed the affected
airbag(s) will not deploy. The more people they hear from the more hope there is for
recall and help for the people that paid $700 or more for the repair to that wiring harness.

I agree with filing NTSB. I blew out a tire on my Diesel truck for the 2nd time same brand. 1st was at 5 mph. 2nd was at 60 mph and did over $2000 damage and momentary loss of control. After I filed a complaint I found the same brand of tires involved in blowout and rollover with total distruction of other vehicles. No deaths fortunately but just lucky. Filing the reports provide data for NTSB to take action and resolve safety issues. So please flie the report.

SRS message in MB w211.
Child seat sensor under the front passenger seat needing replaced, or wired out so the computer wont get this error again. This is one of many big problems with W211 cars.
It can also be seatbelt problem, to much volt going in to the belt relay.

My W211 had have this SRS messeges many times.
1. stering clock damaged cousing SRS problem.
2. 14 days later one of seven computer damaged.
3. 7 months later SRS, Childseat sensor damaged or making error for no reason.
4 time five days ago SRS error again, passenger seat belt relay damaged, to much volts going in.

This doesn´t mean that SRS mean airbag, it can be all safety future with passenger safety like those a have had.

Hope this help even orginal post is 5 years old :)

Crap! I got the SRS light while I was driving in California. The temperate was hot there. Fault code 9103 and 9123 are stored. I've heard that there is a DTB to fix it and it involves cutting out the wire together with the contact pins and using a new longer wire.

Has anyone done it b4? Please share your valuable experience and information.

The repair is all labor and a $15 wiring kit. It is a $650 job. Most dealers will not sell
the repair kit.
As the car sits now with those codes the affected airbag(s) will not deploy in an accident.

I hooked up DAS and cleared the code. I drove around with it. No light. I will keep an eye on it. I have the new Harness part number. It is cheap. It costs more for the shrink wrap solder connectors. I might just get those connectors from some car audio shop if i have to fix the loose harness problem!
