Briefly, I purchased this thing, '94SL500, with a well lit dash. Per forum instructions I replaced all the fuses with copper cancelled the codes and most of the lights went out and have so far remained out. However the SRS light is still on and according to the information I have it is pin 30 in the 38 pin connector. I have attempted to retrieve the codes on pin 30 with the led procedure. When I ground the pin the led will light up but it will not produce a code, not even the single flash indicating all ok. I attempted to cancel whatever might be in there by grounding it for the prescribed 10 seconds and the light is still lit. Am I missing something, is my information incorrect or incomplete, is there another pin that might give me some information or ???? Just a note of thanks, so far the responses I have been getting are spot on and have proven to be extremely useful, THANKS TO ALL.

Hi Agoura:

Going through this SRS posting, from last November, I noticed no one replied to your question.

The answer is: "Yes, you are missing something".

All the modules in your 1994 SL500 can be READ and RESET with the DIY LED fault code reader, EXCEPT for the SRS/Airbag module.

The SRS can only be READ & RESET using a multiplexer digital scanner tool. And, even then, most of these type of tools can't do the SRS.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over which multiplexer tool, available in today's marketplace, can actually READ and RESET the fault code in your SL500's SRS module.

The Star Diagnostic System (SDS) scanner, at your local M-B Dealer, is probably your best bet at this point.

Hope this helps.

Arctic,

You must not have much to do up there in the winter. Since the last post I have been gathering information on the SRS module. The consensus of opinion is that this is not a system one wants to be messing with as it is extremely fragile and subject to deploying for no apparent reason. I quite by chance found myself talking to a Mercedes mobile mechanic, one of the guys that board a plane with their breifcases full of tools and fly all over the world, and his advice was that if I did not want to take it to the dealer to remove the light in the dash. The SRS may not work but the light would not be bothering me. Some time in the future if I have the console out for some reason I will get the number off of the module and see if I can find one on e bay for a price I am willing to pay, that failing the bulb will just stay in the toolbox.

If all goes as planned it is about a year and a half to two years away from turning into a retractable hard top anyway.

I have in the interim temporarily lost interest in the 129 as sometime between now and December I need to pull the heads and clean out the AIR passages. I can not get the AIR code to cancel and everything else seems to be working properly. At the moment it is closer to the bottom than the top of the to do list. December is when I need to have my bi-annual smog check and I no longer have any contacts that will pass it under the table so to speak.

Thanks for the response, it is appreciated.

Hi Agoura:

Perhaps our most experienced R129 Forum Members can help out on this subject of RESETTING an SRS Fault Code.

I've looked at a lot of "Stickies" and threads from other M-B Class Forums, and my summary is that there are only two (2) Scanners that are capable of READING and RESETTING the SRS Light on a 1994 or 1995 SL500 as follows:

1) the Carsoft 7.4 Multiplexer Scan Tool with an old laptop that has a Serial Port

2) M-B Dealer's Star Diagnostic Scan (SDS) tool.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has actually had success with the Carsoft 7.4 System in doing the SRS/Airbag Reset.

Arctic,
I have the carsoft and I have found it to be only marginally helpful. I was cautioned that it does not work well on the pre obd cars. I can assure you from first hand experience that it does not. Unless I am not using it correctly, which is a definate possibility because I am not too tech savy, it will access very little on my '94. What it does access is not all that useful. It is setting on top of my toolbox ready to use and I can not remember the last time I plugged it in. For example I have on any number of occasions in the past used the cancell all codes function. The ABS and ASR lights did not go out until I cancelled the codes manually with the led. I find the led to be much faster and more useful. If as planned my '94 does magically turn into a retractible hard top it will be interesting to plug the carsoft in and see how it works on the later system.

Hey Agoura,

Is your Carsoft still sitting over your toolbox? Do you want me to try it? Maybe just by being in Silicon Valley I'm a little bit more tech savy?
