The light flashing is not a cluster problem. It is coming from the SRS module under the ashtray. Run a quick test and make sure all restraint systems have a check mark. If one
has a [!] or F then that is what is causing the problem.

Just wait a minute here, is the SRS light flashing or the seat belt warning light? Try fastening your seat belt and see if the light stops flashing.

Have you run the short test and looked at the fault codes on other systems? Many of these systems are connected and the fault may not actually be shown on the SRS system.

all fault codes were cleared but fault remained on dash, and i drove the car for a while then it was plugged in again and it says no fault codes present, but the dash is still telling me there is a fault i thought this would clear automatically but it did not so tried going into the instrument cluster to clear it with the computer and the computer returns saying it cannot communicate with the instrument cluster and it is the right MB computer that is being used.so not sure what to try next

It does sound like there is a problem other than the SRS, try disconnecting the battery for 10-20 minutes and try again.

How did you conclude the SRS light at the cluster is flashing for no reason? Sounds like you have played with the control unit and it is now not locked, this is shown by a flashing SRS light at the control unit once ignition is switch on (after a few seconds and keeps on flashing). You have to lock the control unit to the car (VIN). I cannot remember the exact menu from Star but if you were able to open it, you should find how to close the coding.

Remember to double-check that there are no fault codes when closing the SRS control unit.

thanks diesel benz, I will go back and see if I can sort it I am sure its something simple that I have missed, god damn computers can be a pain sometimes!!
Go to the SRS section and scroll down to programming. enter and check the coding. Also check the coding via CGW or ZGW.

Wouldn't he have to have been in developer mode to unlock or clear an module? Even
then I don't know that it is possible to "divorce" the SRS module from the VIN.
At least that is what the training on the repair is after a crash and they come out of
the body shop. Install new unit, code to car and test systems.

Once they are locked to the VIN I thought it was forever.

So did I.

It is locked to that VIN. I checked on Startek info.

There are places that claim to be able to reset them. I have no experience with those
units. I have initialized new ones into a few models at the body shop.

So we are left with a bad connection or a faulty SRS module.

If you change settings for the SRS module e.g. via Special functions (add/remove components etc.), you automatically unlock the the control module. In some cases the module is locked automatically too after the Special functions coding but not always.

The unit may still be coded to the correct VIN but the control unit is not locked IF the SRS light keeps on flashing after some time since ignition is switched on.

Looks like for the W211 you don't even need the special functions password to go to the menu Control unit adaptations, special settings, control unit is released. DAS responds "Control unit UNLOCKED". DAS also gives a hint about a further procedure: Perform coding with menu "Initial startup", this way the control unit is locked again (but shall not be done if fault codes are present, in this case there were none and this should be safe).

I'd also suggest reading WIS carefully. There is a document that explains what the flashing SRS light means although it is quite hidden and a bit difficult to find (I can help you if necessary).

I've seen this on other cars and I would be surprised if you cannot solve this issue as explained above (although my experience was from another car where a special functions password was needed to get the control unit unlocked).

I think this is possible, but the flashing light ref in WIS I cannot find and have been searching for two hours.
