Can anybody tell me what the squeaking I'm hearing at my rear suspension? It seems like when I turn, hit a bump or go up my driveway, I can hear this loud squeak. Anybody with the same experience? Thanks for sharing in advance.

It very well could be the rear shock or spring making the noise. I had a creaking noise in the rear of my ML430. When I changed the shock/strut assembly, the noise was gone. If you do a search there are many posts on this topic and also shock replacement.

Did you get the updated OEM shocks..? and if so, how is the ride.. Is it noticeably better than your original OEM shock when they were ok..?

Thanks,

AC

So did you do replace the shocks yourself? If so, what type of spring compressor did you use? Did you rent one? If a shop did it, how much? Did you get shocks from the dealer/price?

Thanks.

The dealer did mine for $100.00 out the door as a "courtesy". He actually wanted around $350.00 to replace the one bad rear shock[:0]
Whats so amazing about the average repair on the ML, is that the parts that break, should not be going out at 50k.
window switches,fuel pumps, shocks etc......[:(!]

I couldn't tell the difference yet from the old shocks. I just replaced it saturday and haven't driven it much. Not sure also if it's the updated oem. It has mercedes insigna all over it. I had help from a mechanic friend of mine. We did it in his garage. It was about a 5 hour job. It cost me $600 for the 2 rear shocks, four pair of brake pads, resurfacing of the rotors and a lunch. My brakes are squealin also so we replaced them while we're at it. The shocks and the spring came together as one piece. We just used his flat jacks for the spring tension. It was a learning experience for me especially the brake pads since MLs eats them a lot. Next time I could do them myself.

So does your suspension still squeak?

You mentioned the shocks came with the springs. So you did or did not have to compress the springs? I looked up on a parts site that show a rear shock assembly with spring that costs $363. I am not even sure that is a per pair price. However, that is listed for chassis VINs up to -A 093893. My 2000 ML430 is A195xxx which apparantly does not use these assemblies. Besides, the shock alone is at least half that price. How would you determine if you need to replace springs? Sound like a waste of money unless you would not have to spend time and money with a spring compressor.

Thank you Desmodude for your responses. If you replaced all one piece (spring and shock), what did you mean by using flat jacks for the spring tension?

You're welcome JG. It's the not the spring tension we used the flat jacks with, it's for the stabilizers. got confused with the question.

I would recommend injecting oil into the joint area if the shock is good but squeaking only. My ML430 also had left rear squeaking suspension. I injected wd40 (or oil) into the rubber dust cover of the joint at the bottom of the shock and the problem went away. It has been over six months now and nothing was heard. But, now the right rear has just started squeaking. I will do the same this weekend.
I hope this will save you from changing your shocks.. :)
Regards

Well, I forgot to mention what I used to inject oil.. It was a regular syringe with a fine needle. Just poke into the rubber and inject some oil around one cc.. Drive a while and the sound will go away.
