My 500sl 4 speed auto has a sliding switch next to the gear changer. Letter E is forward & S is backward. If I push the switch forward it hides the E and exposes the S if I pull it backward it hides the S and exposes the E. So my question? Is the sport mode engaged when the switch is pulled over the S or when the S is visible? Does it just delay gear changes, there is no reference to it in the manual I have.

I have the same thing.

The mode you're on is the one covered. Else I've been drinking extra fuel for nothing :)
That's why I was going so slow I thought it was the letter I could see

Does it give you 1st gear take off or just longer between changes?

with my 1993 sl500, E mode makes the gear changes longer, if I use S mode it quickens the gear changes and also activates the FGSSW I have fitted.

It's more or less the same with the later five speed boxes, except that E mode will start off in second gear.
