Spark plug removal tool

Just curious as I am thinking about doing my plugs.
Has anyone been able to pry off the plug wires by just using a 17mm open end wrench? Is this tool that much better because its has that bend/curve?

Thanks,

It would need to be a long 17mm

and a long time ago tried one and without the offset angle it made it not an easy job to either remove the boots or when done installing the plugs using the reverse angle to pop the boots back on the plugs and that being a big cause of misfires is a good thing to make sure they are popped on properly.
People use those plug pliers that ruin the wires and make the job much harder,I prefer the way and tool that the brilliant mercedes tech came up with and that's why I sell them and use them.
Other members who have used the offset 17mm plug tool will sing its praises also ;)

Yes it can be done with a 17mm open - at least the front plug on each side. After that the space get a bit tight for the remain 10 wires. :D I tried a normal spanner as well, but it just wasn't worth the effort. I guess anything is possible if you really want to, but after using ohlord's tool, I wouldn't try to do it any other way.

Spark plug removal method

Hi everyone. I did my spark plugs this weekend and they are extremely hard to remove without the right tools. I used the 17mm wrench and ended up breaking the tips of two sparks plugs. That is not a good experience.

=====
But here is the good news. And I hope it works for you. I used a wire that I have attached in the picture. Just make sure you pull it strait out in the direction of the plug and you will be able to pull all of them out. And I would recommend you use gloves so you don't end up with lots of scratches on your hand.

This worked grate for me.

that's

why you use the special 17mm long handled offset boot tool it levers itself against the head and with very little applied energy off pops the metal boot.
$38 dollars well spent as anyone that has used them will attest:thumbsup:

Thanks gents,

I am thinking of getting it from you ohlord. However, after reading gregs210 95/5 post, seems like it's not going to be so easy for a novice wannabe diyer, contemplating now :confused::confused::confused:.
By the way, did you take pictures of the spark plugs change this weekend?

Two

of the members had other obligations come up so we have tried to set it up for this weekend.Really with the boot tool and a few hours it is not a hard job, first time visualizing it might seem hard but one you pop off the engine cover(it really does just pop off)and taking a look at what needs to be done I could explain how to do it over the phone. It is just a matter of the right tools, even the small set at costco,a set of torx bits from the parts store, and the 17mm boot tool.
12 ngk 7090 plugs for $2.75 each and a blanket to lay on the fender.Always remove your belt to avoid scratches.

Hi ohlord,

I think I am somewhat competent :p turning a wrench. Just have to think twice about finding the time now it's 3-4 hours and maybe more for me. I've got to figure a way to get my 3 sig. others to leave me alone for a weekend morning or afternoon - not sure when yet.
I already ordered plugs and had all the necessary wrenches so looks like I may need the tool from you soon.
Thanks for the offer to provide phone support, it's peace of mind.

Regards,

Jeffrey, my apologies: I surely didn't mean to scare you or anyone else off of this DIY job. If you have a good back and pop the second release on the hood to provide additional clearance (indispensable for the CPS...) it's just work. I wasn't mentally prepared for how difficult it was in comparison with some of my other vehicles, which is why I have such a fond (NOT!) memory of it. My back also didn't like the necessary angles involved, and I didn't have the benefit of the great DIYs that have since been added to the site. ;)

In addition to the other tools noted, I would suggest working with 3/8" drive gear as much as possible, and a 1-1/2" extension in addition to the ones G-AMG noted in his excellent DIY post (be sure to read through that a few times, all three parts of it, and study the pictures carefully, all in the sticky). I found a flex-head ratchet to be useful on a couple of plugs (as well as a great help for many other repairs generally) so that may be a worthwhile investment for you. Dielectric grease on the tip of the plug before you put the boot back on makes them snap on a bit easier as well as adding some corrosion resistance. And a decent pair of mechanics' gloves (cheap at Harbor Freight) will protect your hands from a few of the hidden sharp edges -- not just for this task -- and provide enough dexterity you can leave them on throughout.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

We did the meet up

yesterday, for the spark plug clinic I put on.
what a blast.Meeting the members, lots of cool mods, wheels, lowered suspensions, custom exhausts,Rays burgundy air seats that leather matches his burgundy metallic paint on the body.Did a C320 with the v6, if you think plugs are hard to get at on the w210 do a C320 with a hot engine on a 90 degree day:eek:and then imagine that the engine bay has the same engine but much smaller under hood room:D Jon,John,Ray and I all had a good time,it felt as if we knew each other for years and we got some good pics and videos to edit for more diy.
Next we are going to do a diy polish and wax detail with menzerna products FMJ sealant and a top coat of caranuba for a swirl free jewel like show car finish.

My wife had the wagon for the day for her real estate business,so any excuse to bring out the race MGB is fine with me.
I had so much fun I had 3 of Jon's plugs pulled before I remembered it was me that was teaching him:D Then he dove in and learned a few things about his nicely modded C class, custom cat back exhaust, lowered suspension and how hot spark plugs get:D
John's E320 had original plugs with 130000 miles on them so you can bet he will be seeing a few more mpg as well as mph:cool:
Plus he has a toyota pick up that is so lifted you could drive an E class under it.Must have 10 grand of suspension work alone.
