Aloha all,
So I just bought my car and she runs a little rough, I want to do some work myself, like plugs wires and rotor.
I've been researching spark plugs, and I've run into two different camps, oem and performance, I've got a 1980 450SL with 89k, all stock.
I'm more concerned with performance then maintaining stock.
Should I upgrade rotor wires and plugs all at once?
If so some suggestions?
Thanks guys,
Koi

dont worry about oem on the ignition stuff but buy some good aftermarket stuff (ie not the cheapest you can get)

If i were you id do points, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter , air filter. Good luck with it !

Performance plugs would have same effects as a fart to the hurricane.

Plugging and resealing all the engine vacuum leaks is more strainious but returns by far more than salesman's performance spare parts like "unobtainium sparkplugs" and "turbo" stickers or 4x1000W amplifiers

That's my 2 bucks worth of experience

AFAIK there is no benefit to using anything other than stock plug wires etc. You don't have to use MB parts. You don't have points in the '80 model. Cap, rotor, wires and plugs. NGK BP5ES is a good replacement non resistor plug. Others say resistor plugs are fine. Maybe it was just me but my '73 did not seem to run well on platinum resistor plugs so I went back to stock.
