I needed new tires for my wagon and found a set of Carlsson rims with good rubber for short money.

The rims are 16x7.5 ET46. I assumed the additional 5mm of offset would still give me room to clear the suspension, but failed to notice the rubber was 225/60 (versus 215/55) and the 10mm of rubber is too close for comfort for me.:surrender:

Should I just mount the 225/60 tires on my OEM rims or will a 5mm spacer get me to where I want to be with the carlssons? Its a 4matic so should I add spacers all around if I go that route?

Thanks - obligatory 1st post pictures to follow (maybe with new shoes mounted)

Here are the rims by the way.

Hi, SilverSled, and welcome to the forum. Please complete your user profile re: vehicle and location as that can be useful.

It's not just the offset and 10mm width, it's the extra almost inch and a half height. With those specs those sound like S or older SL wheels. Even with stock tires you might need spacers to clear. And no, you can't use those tires on the 210 chassis even on the correct wheel.

Personally I would find something closer to the appropriate offset for the E class. Spacers are a pain, quality ones are expensive and the bottom line is that you have to really, really want a specific wheel design to put up with the cost and headaches.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

+1, You can find a good set of spacers for around $60.00 each. How ever, you must know that there are several stories of wheel spacer failure. IMHO, I would not feel comfortable with them on my car. If you decide to use them, this is not the place to save money, get the best ones out there.

Thanks for the quick replies. The auction ended unsold, but I can get them very cheap. Sounds like the rims would be ok at the 46 offset, just not with the wider/higher profile tires.
