My sister in law has a 2002 C320 Wagon - how do we get rid off the 'SOS error' on the message screen?

does the SOS/Teleaid "Malfunction" occur randomly? or does it only happen when you press the button? i had a similiar problem with my C32 AMG. the solution was rather easy.
