I just sent off all 12 hydraulic cylinders to get rebuilt and now it's time to put on a new top. Any recommendations on fabric (German vs non-German) and dealers would be very much appreciated. I've found prices varying from $350-almost $900. Has anyone had any experience with any of the EBAY dealers? One store had a German top on EBAY for $449 but had it for $529 on their website so I'm a little wary unless I hear otherwise. I intend to tackle the job myself having been quoted $975 for labor by a local top shop. Thanks.

It will help if you put in your location as well as year of your car.

I got a top and leather seat covers from these guys, they supply several of the smaller and known shops in the LA area, as well as nationwide.

I got the German canvass

Thanks. Did you install it yourself? Did you find any unexpected problems along the way? Sorry about not giving my location....didn't have time last night to personalize my profile....and the year of my car was in the last line of my post

Yep. I viewed the videos on the top removal and after successfully extracting the 12 hydraulic cylinders I felt bold enough to tackle the soft top replacement myself. I feel comfortable with giving it a shot and even taking it to a shop if I fail but I was looking for advice on where to purchase a top and what material to use since it appears that probably most of us on this site have probably gone through at least one top. Mine was a replacement which was put on when I bought the car used and I got 10 yrs out of it. There appears to be a lot of options on fabric and I don't know what my current top is made of.

I live in the Atlanta area. I had my soft top replaced by Bud's Benz just West of Atlanta off I-20. They used a GAHH top - correct german fabric. GAHH makes the best tops - probably supplies MBZ (just with plastic windows with the star on them...). Bud's charged me around $1,800 - about $900 each for the top and labor. Not an easy job replacing the top. They are pros. I do most of my own work on my cars. I had no intention of tackling the soft top. It's a days work for an experienced person. Gotta have the right tools and materials (adhesive, etc..).

Like Al said is a job, if you think you can do it go ahead.
I would go for it.
I would pay the extra $100 for the German fabric, but the inexpensive
is OK too.
It would be nice to see them both and decide.

I bought mine off of ebay last summer, 300.00. Took it to an upholster and he installed it for 200.00 it looks factory, this was in Augusta. I would have taken it to Buds outside of Atl if I had the time, I have heard they are the best in the area.

I replaced mine last year with a top from GAHH, really good reputation and really good top. They will even give you the names of installers in your area. Top was about $1000, install was $500 in Minneapolis with their installer. This was the German top of the line fabric. I think they do other fabrics for $300-$500 less.
I understand the need to save money, but be sure you are getting a quality top that fits..
