After TXmudman's post, I called the service tech so suggest again that the deck could just be bent back. He said he checked again, and it could not.

So I went to pick the car up, asked for the old part, and proceded to bend it back, straight, there in the service bay. He said "oh, I guess we should have tried that first, huh." $230 (for the unneeded part alone) later, I have a deck lid system that still isn't quite straight, because despite the new component, apparently other things were bent too. $431 total bill. Monday I go back for more tweaking. I think I'll hold on to the old deck in case it happens again though, since all does not appear to be in perfectalignment yet.

Lessons? If you hear a "pop" during the opening or closing process, stop immediately; magnesium deck lids CAN be bent back; and MB techs are lazy. At least my service guy knocked off around $150 from the first estimate.
