Went in to smog check today and the darn check engine light came on during the test. I failed with flying colors. The smog check shop gave me a print out with the codes. I hope the Gurus on from the club can guide me and give me some pdf's to DIY.

They Tech at the shop mentioned sometimes a faulty O2 sensor can cause a domino effect of these codes to appear. I hope he's right, and all I need is an O2 sensor.

P0105 Map/Baro Ckt Malfunction
P0442 EVAP Ctrl System small leak detected (Brake booster leak maybe causing this)
P0400 EGR Flow Malfunction (DIY. cleaned the valve 3-4 months ago).
P0136 O2 Sensor Fault, Bank 1, sensor 2. (I have the DIY to this, already ordered the part)

Thanks in advance.

Detane, you have had the brake booster problem since 12/08, why you have waited so long to replace it is a mystery.

Secondly, any one of the codes that you listed will immediately trigger the CEL. I'm taking a wild guess here, but I will bet that you cleared the CEL just prior to going for the inspection in hope that you would pass.

I don't see replacing an O2 sensor is going to make the other three codes disappear. All of the other three codes have their components operate with vacuum.

How long do you have to repair, before bringing it back for inspection? If it's 10 days you are going to need more time and you had better request an extension to sort things out.

P0105. Replace MAP sensor and its vacuum hose. Check connector first.

P0136. Replace right rear O2 sensor. Be very careful not to damage body side connector.

P0400. EGR function is checked during deceleration using info from MAP. Have you cleaned EGR pipe?

P0442. This one is most difficult to sort out. Gas cap, purge valve, charcoal canister shut off valve and everything in between can be a problem. Start with new gas cap.

Leaking brake booster may turn into wreck. From hiss to whoosh as semi in front of you gets bigger and bigger while your rear end is biting doughnut out off the seat.

for my education, what is the function of this MAP sensor
"The manifold absolute pressure sensor provides instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit. The data is used to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass flow rate, which in turn determines the required fuel metering for optimum combustion."

I know, I made a total idiot move on not repairing or changing the brake booster. I plan on getting that done asap. I enrolled in school to study Industrial Design and everything else in life got put on hold.

Reading Detane Post and having emission test nex month I found today
P0161 & P0156 (pd)Code, no CEL. Are these codes going to effect the test?
the smog tech said they will effect the test. The machine scans for all fault codes, so even if your emissions test passes, the fault codes will cause you to fail.
This was after I asked if he could clear the codes and retry the test. =)

My emissions are only 0.1 , and the smog tech was amazed because I have an 8-cyl.

Glad to say I have a DMV FREE extension so I can repair the ML and get it into Tip Top shape once again.
