Hello friends
I have a ML320 2000, my fuel pump needed to be replaced and so I purchased a fuel pump from a website for around $150 and the mechanic put it in, 5 days has passed but the car smells gasoline and it's so bad that I can't breath in there. I called the mechanic and he is telling me that it's my fault because I gave him a Chinese made part to put in my car!
My question is: is it dangerous to drive the car like this? I am sure the fuel pump is leaking and what do you think I should do ?
Thanks guys

Sounds like the seal has not been aligned properly and is leaking. Have a look at the tank from under the car and see if there is any trace of fuel coming down over the tank even if its dried you will see tell tail signs off a leak. Or you may have a damaged fuel line and its leaking when its under pressure.

You answered this question yourself. If its this bad, then its approaching an explosive mixture. I would not drive your car.

He needs to remove and install it again by giving specific attention to the gasket. Yes a fuel leak is a dangerous thing and needs to be fixed.

Another issue or two will be, did he seal the cover plate that is in the interior of the vehicle? Did he replace any of the lines at the fuel pump? With age, those lines are difficult to remove and people damage them trying to get them off. And did he spill gas on the carpet when removing the old pump? And as everyone else said- check the seal, he probably reused the old one.

I wonder why he has not checked back??

Maybe his ML went boom!

I should not make light of a potentially lethal problem, so I hope the OP is OK and comes back to read the suggestions.

That's has always been a problem on this forum. They start a thread and then check back days later or never at all.

Sorry for the late reply guys, my dad is very sick in the hospital that's why I couldn't get back to you. I noticed every time I put gas in the car the smell got 10 times worse so I stopped driving. I will take it to the shop this week to get it fixed.
I'll let you all know what the problem was.
Thanks again

Even some very good diyers are put off by fuel issues. And if he got it done at a shop and they messed up, they should be the ones to rectify it. If he doesn't touch it they can't play the 'you were messing with it' card.

seems strange to be smelling it that much especially with the plate being sealed back up. i find it hard to believe it wasn't. $180 dollar fuel pump is probably URO. i actually put in an Airtex fuel pump $260 (394 at advance and only one they have). next step up is like $500. i hope it works out. felt somewhat cheap but so did the factory pump.

anyways, i can see somebody putting in the pump and not pushing it down enough to seat it all the way (or folding the seal up). with the new seal you have to put some ass into it for the pump to go all the way down and be able to get the locking ring on correctly.

or fuel lines.

either way i don't think it being a shitty fuel pump is why it smells so bad.

EDIT: after some reading Airtex may be a junk fuel pump after all. guess ill find out.

Worldpac sent me one via my local Carquest. With my discount it was just under $200 and they said it was OEM. Well I took it out of the packing carton and it was a friggin URO pump. I left it sealed and went on a search. Pricing is all over the place for non OE and OEM pumps so I decided to check out the MB part.

Genuine MB pumps list for $438. Parts.com has them for $314. I get wholesale at my local dealers and they had it on the shelf for $350 plus tax on my account there.
