My '96 S320 has been more and more sluggish going into reverse lately after the car is warmed up. I have read other threads on here regarding reverse failure and they point to a bad B2 seal in the transmission. My questions are

1) Is this most likely the cause of my sluggish reverse after the car is warmed up
2) If so, does replacement of the seal require the removal of the transmission?

The car otherwise drives and shifts fine even though it has approximately 220k miles. I have owned the car for eight years now and I have changed the fluid in the trans at regular intervals. Last change was last November and the trans pan was totally clean.

Unfortunately, the seal replacement requires the transmission to be dropped and opened.
Given that you've got 200,000+ miles on it, under these circumstances, the best course of action will be to refresh everything, not just the B3 seal (you indicate B2 but it is the B3 that is responsible for the reverse).

Good luck.
