Ok so I bought a sedan replacement motor for my 300TD. I have come to find out that the SLS pump system is powered from the head on the motor.

So my questions is does anyone have a detailed pic of the head workings that drive the pump?

Can I just swap the head from the 300TD to the replacement motor?

Can I retro fit the non SLS head to work the SLS system? (are there ports for the system there, not being used?)

Are the head bolts a once and done deal or can I reuse them?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I don't know about the second question but I'm pretty sure the non SLS engine has a plug where the pump would go that can simply be removed. Thats what I've seen at least.

Yes. Assuming it's free of cracks. If it's cracked... Tougher decision.

No. The castings are different, there's no support for the pump on a non-SLS head.

But: there's always the possibility of using a twin-pump of a six cylinder W124; it's a combined SLS/power steering pump. It's no straight fit, though (length of pipes/hoses, bracket)

I think the workshop manual has data for maximum stretch of the head bolts. If they are within specification, they can be reused.

I forgot about using a duplex pump from a 87 300TD. May be tough to locate though.

When swapping heads, does he have to move the timing chain from the wagon over as well? In other words, is the SLS pump chain driven or is it driven independent of the chain?

Thanks, all of that's good to know.

MY knowledge is a bit vague here, but it's driven by the main chain. The non-SLS head has an idler gear where the pump drive is, suppose it's the same. Might be a good moment to install a new chain, though ;)

Ok so I got caught up on the paint and body work/mechanical work I had on the books besides working full time.

I started taking the head off the wagon engine. nothing but troubles. I stripped out two torks holes on two head bolts. :crybaby2:

So I'm done with trying this head swap.

I going with the 87 power steering/SLS pump combo and retro fitting it to the sedan engine so I don't have to take it apart and create more problems.

I'll post up pics once I get started on this for those that would like to do this swap.

I'm not thrilled about having to spend another $200+ on a pump but it's better then messing up a good running engine.

Ok go it, thanks.

Mine was from snap-on. It's a T55 so I don't think it's the right one.

Well I won't be using the old head it's done for without 2 new valves and some machine work. :crybaby2:

So it's on to a power steering pump/SLS pump off an 87 and some new plumbing to make it work.

Impressive pictures - I reckon you've got a fair amount of work to get that running again.

Well I'm tossed up now as to what to do. I need to get the valves out of this head to see how the seats are. If they are ok I'm going to swap valves out of the sedan head and the injector pre-chambers and drop this head on the sedan bottom end and run it. Then I'll fix or sell the rest of this motor down the road.
