I have a 1980 240d that always shuts off when the ignition is turned off but sometimes the shut off is immediate and sometimes it will run 8 to 15 seconds after the ignition is turned off. The engine seems to gradually lose RPMs until it quits. I have been unable to find a vacuum leak under the hood. The door locks also work slowly. I read in another forum about a vacuum leak around a door lock causeing a similar problem. However my 1984 300SD has a different vacuum pump for the doors. does anyone know whether the 240D door locks works off the same vacuum pump as the fuel shut off valve. Any other ideas?

You've got a vacuum leak somewhere. Best bet is to get your Mity Vac and follow the step by step trouble shooting procedure in the manual for tracking it down. Could be the doors, the fuel filler door, the trunk, etc. Could just be a loose connection under the hood. If your oil was recently changed, it's possible that something could have gotten knocked loose in the vicinity of the oil filter housing.

Are you turning the Idle down before pushing the switch to the stop position?
That's the proper procedure,would lower the RPM's and might do the trick. [:eek:)]

Using the idle control knob I guess. Makes sense.

It sounds to me like Hoss' problem is a leak somewhere and it's not yet a full blown leak because it's gradually shutting off (very slowly).

Hoss, how many miles on it? The 240D door locks work off the same vacuum pump as the fuel shut off valve, yes. Check all vacuum lines in and around the injector pump, usually those are the ones to go first since they're closest to the engine and would get heated up alot (hence, dry up).

The idle control knob on the dash shouldn't be turned up during driving anyway. It's only needed during initial start up maybe in cold weather. If everything is right with the car, you likely won't need it at all. I have never had to use mine. The last time I turned it was about ten years ago I think just to test it to see if it still worked. :)
