1971 220D - manual transmission - the gear stick is quite 'sloppy' - I removed the gear stick boot and tightened down the brass screw a bit but this has not done a great deal to improve it - any other suggestions?

Also there is an annoying 'buzz' coming from the top of the gear stick area - I think I have found out what it might be - as you change gear it feels like there must be a spring plate or something to keep pressure on a part - as you change gear I can hear it make a 'ting' noise - at certain rpm this noise is quite annoying - is there any way to get to this to make some adjustments without taking the gear box apart?


Finally, any source for new gear shift boot? Mine is split.

Having just rebuilt the linkage in my 67 fintail, there are lots of little rubber parts and bushings to this linkage. Check out the EPC, ask Classic Center to send you a diagram so you can order parts from them, All parts avail at classic center, it was about $100 in parts to do everything on mine and made a 100% improvement.

Can this be done without removing gearbox unit from car? I assume a lift would be the way to go?
Can you post link to the place you mentioned?

Tightening up the brass section on the top helped a lot but there is still something 'rattling/buzzing' in there at certain rpm it feels like some kind of pressure spring to keep the gear shift tight.

The shifter assembly itself is mounted to the transmission tunnel and is removed from the interior. The shifter rods are easiest to access on a lift but not particularly difficult with the car on jack stands

Remove the shift knob (I think it's a 15MM lock nut holding the shift knob tight), slide off the boot and the bolts are easy to spot.

For the easiest access remove the window switches, undo the holding screws for the window plate and then the plastic surround under the shift boot. There is a phillips head screw in the front of the shift surround.

You now have a clear view of the mechanism. The electrical switch is for the reverse lights.

The shift rods under the car have rubber bushings, those wear out. Check and replace if necessary.

You do have floor shift? or column shift?
