On my way to work morning a state trooper pulls up next to me....i was like Oh #$%^ (i was only doing about 65 in a 55.....but you know how these situations go), he looks at me , i am pretty sure he is going to point to the side of the hwy and ask me to pull over....instead, he gives me a thumbs up and drives off.

A while back I was driving out in west Texas with my cruise control set at exactly 100 mph on the interstate. I was heading directly into the setting sun and was suprised when a Texas State Trooper appeared in my rear view mirror and turned on his headlights. I figured he had me so I didn't even slow down. I could see him clearly, checking my license plates. After a few minutes he pulled over into the left lane and inched up beside me. I looked at him, he looked at me, and then he took off like a rocket. He disappeared into the sunset. I never did slow down. A hundred mph all the way from San Antonio to El Paso. That is a 450 mile drive. [8D]

Speed limits in Europe are becoming ever more strict, but the practice of police citing drivers solely for speed-related offenses is still uncommon by American standards. I always wince when driving on Italian Autostrade the first time I see a "civilian" blow past an Italian police car (two aboard) driving in the middle traffic lane. Police attention is focused more on dangerous or careless driving, so you really have to be moving to arouse their interest. In New York state, police will stop you many times for slight speed-related transgressions, but the truly moronic driver who cuts a swath across three lanes of traffic while on the phone usually gets a free pass. I just don't understand it. Dinoman

I was driving my Toyota 4-Runner at the time. I just WISH I could have been in my 55.

Just a few days ago I was out in western New Mexico driving flat out in a Jeep SUV rental. I drove about 500 miles on several "remote desert highway(s), wind in my hair"... you remember the Eagles' song, "Hotel California"? That is where the similarity stops...no "sweet smell of colitas" in my car. [8D] I was REALLY wishing I had my own 55 out there. Didn't see one single trooper in several days of driving around the entire southwestern corner of New Mexico. The weather was great, the pavement was great, zero traffic, why oh why, was I stuck in an SUV? [:(][:(]

San Antonio to El Paso is 550 miles. It must be that speed. California doesn't have recipocation with many states so most police in other states would let you go. I got a speeding ticket in Seminole, TX once. Thought about not paying it but I don't want to be extradicted to Seminole the next time I get stopped in Texas. The part time judge there is god in that part of the country.

I was in my SLK traveling in medium traffic from I880 northbound to I680 eastbound with a MR2 on my tail, probably doing 75 in a 55 zone. Then an unmarked car got behind me with lights flashing (on the visor) and a marked CHiP car in front started doing Zs across all 5 lanes. After I slowed, they just looked and let me go.

Hmm... both highways are 65 MPH, not 55. Unless of course if you were on the connector (35 MPH) or 262 (45MPH). If you were doing 75 in one of those, you'd be toast. [:D] But 75 in 65 is almost not worth the CHP's attention, unless you're passing at a much higher rate of speed and prevailing traffic...

To Dinoman:

I go to Europe at least three times per year and drive quite a bit in Italy. On my last three trips I've received a speeding ticket, but not from a police officer. It's those damned speed cameras that seem to be everywhere. I've been ticketed in Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands- and, worst of all, I never know until about three months after the fact when I get the ticket in the mail, courtesy of the rental car company and the italian, German, or Netherlands consulate here in the states. I've paid all the tickets so far, as I'd like to be able to continue to rent a vehicle in future.

Strangely, the only time I didn't get a ticket was last December when I collected my SLK in Sindelfingen. I rarely had the car under 85 (after break-in) during my 15 day drive as I knew I wouldn't have to pay any ticket not issued "on the spot" as my temporary European plates would be permanently discarded upon the car landing in the states.

I leave for italy in two weeks and then go to Germany and Denmark in May. I'll be watching for the speed cameras (hope I see them in time)

Rdfield, I have been much more fortunate than you, although I must confess that on more recent trips, I tend to drive more slowly, for a number of reasons. A few years ago, not far from CDG airport in Paris, I was in the left hand lane, going about 110 mph, when I spotted a highway maintenance truck in my lane, parked. A quick swerve into the right lane did the trick, but not without adding a few gray hairs! On the subject of the rental company passing on the tickets, I was once told, on checking into the Loews Monte-Carlo Hotel, to park with two tires on the curb just outside the loaded hotel parking lot. I came close to having the front wheel booted, and moved the car just in time. That would have been hard to explain to the good people at Hertz! Good luck on your upcoming trip.

I was sure that I got snapped by one or more speed cameras while I was in Europe on European Delivery. I was curious if I'd get greetings in the mail upon my return to the U.S. Just curious, has anyone here who has participated in European Delivery ever been tracked down and ticketed after encountering a speed camera?
