My belt drive system is OK for now. Things like cylinder knock, idler pulley, harmonic balancer, tensioner are fine (were checked by mechanic).
I have one small thing, to the right of top engine block, right by the driver's side strut column which is making knocking sound. It comes on and off.
What is this thing and is this behavior normal?

it usually not a knock as much as a clicking sound, tick tick tick fast? yes that is normal. I think it is the other one in front. feel it. I have that also asked my indy and I forgot what he said though.

Exactly, its so small so it is more of a clicking sound. And the only way I was able to identify its coming from that part is by feeling it. When you touch it, its evident the sound is coming from that particular part. I also think it ^ with RPMs. It has some lines coming to and from.

fuel tank purge valve. some ticking is normal, overly loud or continuous is not good. You could try cleaning it first. I don't think its very expensive, so if all else fails, replace it.
i thought it was the vacuum system for the engine, i have also heard the clicking but i hardly ever notice it cuz it doesnt com on too often to where i can hear it, but like oliver said its normal but not good when its clicking too much

Thank you guys!
Well the knocking sound is not too loud on mine. I do hear it from inside of the car once in a while, but if I do, the sound is low. It is more evident when I listen for it outside, or when the hood is up.

Oliver mentioned cleaning it first. What is safe procedure to disconnect it? How do I clean this thing?
Thanx.

Knocking? make sure it is what we are trying to explain, I am talking about a tick tick tick sound and cannot hear this from in the car or when the hood (bonnet) is down. The large one is what I think you are talking about and the one I am talking about is the small one in front of the one you show pics on. the very first picture shows both. I think Ekbenz and oliverk are thinking of two different units? Vaccum system in back and fuel tank purge valve in front. FTPV is the one I am thinking of that ticks in mine. the other does not make any noise I just checked. Lets be clear! The FTP valve is what I was told from my indie that is making that sound as it was bugging me and he said it was normal.

Im pretty certain the front sensor in her first picture has something to do with the suspension, since its on both sides.

The thing that is in like 3 pictures should be the FTPV, should say MOT on it, etc.

Thank you for identifying the part which I am concerned about.
I would like to clarify that under certain conditions I sometimes do hear the "ticking" from the inside of the vehicle. That happens when the car had recently been started up and the rpms are at their minimum. I also hear a very very slight "whistling" sound from the engine and rpms are dropping (ie. when im pulling to a complete stop and engine drops into idle) The engine get very very quiet, and the only thing that can be heard is that low low whistle. Otherwise and most of the time, the tick can never be heard.

oliver,
how is this ftpv/ regeneration valve cleaned? i have the same tick/knock
thank
todd
Remember that ticking from the MOT is normal. But if you want to clean it, remove it from the car, put on some rubber or nitrile gloves with some goggles and, working outside or in a well-ventilated area away from sparks/flame, carefully spray aerosol carb cleaner into the hose ports, shaking the valve periodically. Make sure the electrical connector stays above the hose connections (you don't want dirty ooze running into it) and spend a minute or so doing that. The rattle will free up and lighten a bit if it was dirty/gummy.

Then let it dry for twenty minutes or so and reinstall.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

You feel it ticking in your feet?
I imagine then it is very loud from the outside of the car.
Better replace it soon.

I still do not get this? it is knocking loud from the inside of the car and ticking from the inside of the engine compartment? are you having problems with your vehicle? or you just want to do some prevention work? Before you muck with this have a dealer or indy look at this because there is way to much confusion in this thread.
