At idle my 1992 500 SL is running a bit rough, you can sense when sitting in the car that there are uneven vibrations, if applying just a tiny amount of throttle the problem will persist up until roughly 1,5 000 rpm, at higher rpms there is no trace of the problem and it runs great. The car has only done just under 35000km = 21748mi, Japanese import.

thanks a bunch

Do not know of the exact problem, my indie diagnosed the fault.

A new one was very expensive.

Got a used one from a breakers yard, it solved the problem.

Good luck.

1. Remove the caps and rotors.
Ck for damages.

2. Remove the air box.
Push with your finger the air sensor plate.
It should go down with resistance, (controlled.)

Look for the space all around, it should be even/centered.

If dirty clean it with carburetor spray cleaner.
You may also need injectors.

aam.

There are so many things that may cause this and the suggestions so far make sense as a first check I would also add to check the vacuum lines, I had a similar problem and one had come loose.

You are welcome.
Please tell us what you did, how it worked.
That may help other members... ;)

Regards,
aam.
Will do aam and thanks gfern for the additional advise. I have put the car away for storage over winter but when I get some help from my brother I will have a look at it and see if we can find any more clues. Also the car was parked with soft top up in extraordinary heavy rain, after this I heard sounds like fluid splashing around while driving, anyone knows where water would be likely to accumulate ?

Do it fast, to prevent more damage.
I just hope is not too late.

In the trunk under the tire, Top oil Pump.

Under the battery, also in the opposite side, cassette/CD player.

Under the floors, front & rear, expensive real-estate, seat modules, relays, Etc.
CK especially the back right side, Top Module.$$$$

Under the doors.

To drain the water, there are rubber buttons that you can remove...

More possible are the doors, and from the third brake light seal.

Regards,
aam.
