Hi guys, I need 2 new front suspension struts for my SL55 AMG according to my garage. They said there is alot of play in the ball joints and i need to change both struts because the ball joints are not replaceable. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or knows if there is a cheaper way of fixing them as replacing them will cost over $3000! Any help appreciated!

I need the bottom part of number 17 if anyone can help. Mercedes do not supply this ball joint in the UK that sits at the bottom of the strut (they say it is part of the strut itself). If I can locate this joint, my mechanic said he can remove the old worn one and press the new one in.

The play in the ball joints -- did they demonstrate it for you? Is it causing a knocking or other sound? Because if this were my car I would tend not to be concerned about play at that point in the suspension.

They did demonstrate it to me and the wheel was able to move up and down while on the ramp. There is no audible noise when i drive however.. Is this a common problem, does it need changing or shall i just leave it? I am guessing that if i do want to sort it, i wil have to purchase 2 new struts, right?

Ball Joints

Unfortunately, the ball joint is part of the shock. You cannot purchase just the ball joint from Mercedes. We are going to have remanufactured shocks available in another month or two if you can hold off that long. The cost for the remanufactured shock is going to be around $500.00 each. That should save you some money. I don’t know why Mercedes did not make that lower ball joint available separately? We had to tool up a new joint in order to remanufacture the front shocks. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you
Adam
