I heard that most V8 modern cars have the option to switch down from V8 engine to V6 to save gas. Is there such a thing on 2004 sl500?

thanks

so lets say you get a V6 motor and do the conversion for under $7000 (if you lucky) and you will save about 4MPG in the whole deal. How many miles at ($3.80 per gallon) you would have to drive to start saving money?

Break out your calculator.

I'm not looking to modify the engine to make this happen .. just asking if this option already comes with the car. It would be nice to have this option on $100k car (not that I paid that :)).

I think he means like those "Pirus" or whatever they are called where the electric motor kicks in and out.......Only two cylinders go on and off?

Some of the newer GM and maybe Chrysler vehicles with V8 engines will stop fuel and spark to 2 or 4 cylinders during cruising in order to save gas.

I do not know of any such option for any Mercedes vehicle, although I haven't looked much into it.

Food for thought though, Ford is getting tremendously better performance/mileage out of its EcoBoost turbocharged engines than any of the engines that shut cylinders down. A cylinder not generating power is robbing power.

^Not on a Benz, they only have FSS fuel safety shut off in case of an electronic failure.
