I just installed new Champion Iridium Spark plugs and BG cleaned injection system and went for drive to mountains in North Carolina.
With soft top up we drove at average at 77mph with AC off and after 215 miles of driving checked the milage and got impressive results 24.9mpg. It is better than my Audi A6 quattro.

After that soft top went down and driving mountains road we didn't care about milage any more.

It is 2001 SL500 with over 100K miles on the engine.

Those iridium spark plugs definetely helped.

I've found that if I keep my foot out of it, I can push 25mpg at 80mph highway speeds with AC and consider that pretty darned good with our 99 SL.

Best I ever get out of my 99 SL500 with 107k miles is 25-27 mpg (imperial). Worst is rarely below 20. Usually I get about 23.

I am finding the opposite, my friend and I both have 1993 low milage, nice condition 500SLs and we both only get 300KMs per tank (190 miles)This is in heavy city driving (Tokyo) but still seems quite rude to us. What do you guys get per tank and what size is the tank. Any comments...

Cheers ...

Tank is just under 25 US Gallons and I get approx 350 Mile Per Tank, and average 23.5 MPG town and country driving

Year of production makes huge difference on gas milage, due to transmission differences
Quote from Ken Rockwell.
"Earlier models with the inferior mechanical 4 speed automatic transmission which lacked overdrive and took forever to downshift when you stepped on the gas only got EPA ratings of 14 MPG city / 18 MPG highway (1990 - 1993) or 16 MPG city / 20 MPG highway (1994 and 1995)".

Thanks but please remember that Rockwell does not let the truth get in the way of a good story. Many others have disputed the kickdown comment and the door handle stuff he just made up...

We commonly ran 340 to 360 miles on a tank in our `99 SL mixed highway and in-town driving.

I tested my -90 500SL on swedish "autobahn" just criusing at 140 km/h. It came out about 1 litre / 10 km. That would be around 24 mpg.
