Just diagnosed the dreaded leaking evaporator core problem. Use charged dye method to locate leak. Have several options on core purchase. From $199.00-875.00. Some cooper, some alum. Confirmed 16 hours labor for dash removal. Anyone this expirence? Would appreciate input, suggestions, avoidable pitfalls etc. Is dash removal something I should attempt?

The evaporator and additional parts were replaced on my 1992 500SL. The work was performed by a MB dealer. The total cost $ 2,600 parts/labor.
I would highly recommend an authorized dealer to perform the work: The entire dash is removed, and they have to extract the evaporator unit from a difficult place, and then replace all the hoses and the dash.
It's labor intensive, and if not properly done a mechanic can screw up a lot of electronics while the dash is removed: The work done by the dealer is under warranty for 12 months.
