Does anyone know how to make S55 or E55 wheels fit the SL?
I know there is an offset difference, but is it safe to use spacers and if so any suggested suppliers?
There are other issues: bolt sizes/lengths; any expertise out there?

It is not enough to refer to a model wheel - there are so many permutations.
What are the wheel dimensions that you propose using - 18'' or 19''? then what are the rim widths, noting also if they are staggered (front narrower than the rear).
With this info it is easy to calculate.
Typically on a 230:
AMG 18X8.5 all round = 30ET
AMG 18x8.5 front = 30ET
AMG 18x9.5 rear = 33ET
AMG 19x8.5 all round = 34ET
AMG 19x8.5 front = 34ET
AMG 19x9.5 rear = 31ET
AMG 19x10.5 rear = 28ET

Thanks so much for the help. Below is the information that the seller is providing me:

The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport - Fronts are 245/45/18 zr and the Rear are 265/40/18 zr. From Mercedes they have a stagger fitment. Fronts are 18x8.5 and the Rears are 18x9. They came off of my 2005 S55.

Does this provide the appropriate information to determine if they will fit?

Do you know what the ET dimension is of the wheels. ET is the offset which is the all important thing to watch. The ET number will be emossed on the inside of the rim.

Looking at the [maybe limited] recommended list I have of wheels for the R230 from MB, AMG, Brabus and Carlson they all list the tyres for the 18x8.5 wheel as 255/40. I do not have anything showing for an 18x9 wheel, but the 18x9.5 wheels recommend a 255/40 if fitted to the front or a 285/35 if fitted on the rear.

So it looks as if the tyres will be out of place, but all this depends on the ET. If they are 30 - 33, then with the 'correct' tyres, you are OK.

Hal,
I'm the 3rd one jumping in looking for the same answer that John is looking for. I'm considering some wheels that apparently are from an S55
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/sale-trade-wanted-items/1421178-amg-18-mercedes-split-spoke-wheels.html The 8.5 fronts are ET25 and the 9.5 rears are ET28. The manual for the 05 SL500 call for 8.5 ET35 and 9.5 ET40.

So the question: is the gap between the SL500 specs and the offset on the S55 wheels going to be problematic and if yes, can spacers be used to correct?

Thanks Hal.

John - are we both looking at the same set of wheels?
